K-12 News Network was instrumental in the 18-month investigative journalism effort to identify the many missteps taken by former Superintendent John Deasy in his questionable rollout of the 1:1 iPad program and launch of new MiSiS student scheduling software. Our scoop of RFPs and the 2013 Apple contract sparked lengthy scrutiny by area corporate media outlets. The FBI continues to investigate the appearance of bid-rigging, possibly indicated by some very cozy emails exchanged between Deasy and the executives at Apple and Pearson well in advance of the two companies eventually winning the lucrative contract with Los Angeles Unified School District.

The report written by Michael Culatta, Director of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education, serves as a useful overview of the key things school districts should be doing to make sure all children have equitable access to technology that helps them learn.

The report from Culatta to Interim Superintendent of LAUSD, Ramon Cortines, is embedded below.
